N-Methyl Pyrrolidone (NMP) is a five-membered cyclic amide and an organic polar solvent.NMP has the chemical formula C5H9NO, molecular weight 99.131, CAS registry number 872-50-4, EINECS registry number 212-828-1 CAS No. 872-50-4, EINECS No. 212-828-1. Physical Properties NMP is colorless to light yellow transparent liquid, slightly ammonia odor, density is about 1.028g/cm³, melting point is -24ºC, boiling point is 202ºC (at 101.3kPa), flash point is 86.1ºC.NMP is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and benzene and other organic solvents, can dissolve most organic and Inorganic compounds, polar gases, natural and synthetic polymer compounds Chemical Properties NMP is relatively stable in neutral solution, but may be hydrolyzed under strong acid or alkali conditions. It has certain reactivity and can react with many compounds, such as alkylation with olefin in the presence of alkali catalyst.

Uses NMP has a wide range of applications in several fields due to its unique physicochemical properties: Solvent and dispersant: used in the production of coatings, paints and fuels. Extractant: Used in aromatics extraction, lubricant refining, acetylene thickening, etc. Cleaning agent: used in industrial cleaning, cleaning and degreasing treatment of metal surfaces. Electronic materials: used as supporting solvents for electronic insulating materials, lithium battery positive binder. Plastic processing: as a solvent and plasticizer in plastic processing, to improve the processing performance and physical properties of plastics. Agricultural chemicals: as solvents and synergists for pesticides, to improve the dispersion and permeability of pesticides. Safety NMP has a mild irritating effect on the skin, but no absorption effect has been seen. Due to the low vapor pressure, the risk of a single inhalation is small. However, chronic effects can lead to central nervous system dysfunction and cause lesions in the respiratory organs, kidneys and vascular system. The maximum permissible concentration in the workplace is 100mg/m³. Field operators should wear masks, protective glasses and gloves.
