Aluminum chloride, an inorganic compound with the formula AlCl3, is a compound of chlorine and aluminum. Aluminum chloride melting point, boiling point is very low, and will sublimate, as a covalent compound. Molten aluminum chloride does not conduct electricity, unlike most salts containing halogen ions (such as sodium chloride).
AlCl3 is a "YCl3" structure, which is the densest stacking structure of Al3+ cube, while Al3+ occupies the adjacent tetrahedral Spaces of the densest packing frame of Br−. At melting, AlCl3 forms a volatile dimer, Al2Cl6, containing two three-center, four-electron chlorine Bridges. At higher temperatures, Al2Cl6 dimers dissociate to form planar triangular AlCl3, similar in structure to boron trifluoride (BF3).

Product Application
Aluminum chloride has extensive commercial applications. It is used primarily in the electrolytic production of aluminum. Another major use involves its catalytic applications in many organic reactions, including Friedel-Crafts alkylation, polymerization, isomerization, hydrocracking, oxidation, decarboxylation, and dehydrogenation. It is also used in the production of rare earth chlorides, electroplating of aluminum and in many metal finishing and metallurgical operations.
