N-Hexane (n-hexane) is a colorless and transparent liquid with a special slight odor, extremely volatile, and can be arbitrarily miscible with ethanol, ether and chloroform, but insoluble in water. It is chemically stable, with a relative density of 0.660, a freezing point of -95 to -100ºC, a boiling point of 69ºC and a flash point of -17.2ºC. Chemical Properties The molecular formula of n-hexane is CH3(CH2)4CH3, molecular weight is 86.18. It is a flammable liquid, the vapor can form an explosive mixture with air, the explosion limit is 1.18%~7.43% (volume). Uses Hexane has a wide range of applications in several fields: Solvent: Used in the determination of water in methanol, ultraviolet spectral analysis, pesticide residue analysis, high performance liquid chromatography and gas chromatography analysis standards. Organic synthesis: used as a solvent in organic synthesis. Extraction: Used as extractant in pharmaceutical industry, also used in the extraction of edible vegetable oil2.
