Sodium sulfide (Na2S) is an inorganic compound with the chemical formula Na2S and is commonly known as odoriferous alkali, odoriferous soda, and sulfide alkali. It is a colorless or light yellow crystalline powder, easily soluble in water, forming a strong alkaline aqueous solution. Sodium sulfide easily deliquesces in air and releases toxic hydrogen sulfide gas with a rotten egg odor. |

Physical Properties Sodium sulfide has a melting point of 950ºC and a density of 1.86 g/cm³. It is highly soluble in water, easily soluble in cold and hot water, slightly soluble in ethanol, insoluble in ether and acetone. Sodium sulfide is sensitive to light and will gradually oxidize to generate sodium thiosulfate, sodium sulfite and sodium sulfate when exposed to air24. Chemical Properties Sodium sulfide will deliquesce in air and emit hydrogen sulfide gas. It reacts with acids to form hydrogen sulfide, which is corrosive and flammable. It may explode on high heat or on impact. Sodium sulfide is partially hydrolyzed in water to sodium hydroxide and sodium hydrosulfide. |

Dyestuff industry: used in the production of sulfide dyes, such as sulfide green and sulfide blue. Pharmaceutical industry: used in the production of antipyretic drugs such as finasteride. |
